Beyond Oracular Ambiguity

چکیده
In studies of ancient Greek divination, oracles are often claimed to pronounce ambiguous but true statements within an intricately ordered cosmos. There exist, however, several problematic exceptions. Book 2 the Iliad , Zeus deliberately deceives Agamemnon through a prophetic dream; Hesiod’s Muses speak truths or lies depending on their mood; and Apollo’s utterances can harm as easily help. The possibility divine deceit forces us reconsider ontological assumptions which early divination was understood operate. Adopting Philippe Descola’s concept ‘analogism’, I argue that rather than means reading cosmos, resembles more act diplomacy, attempt establish successful communication with supernatural beings always potentially fragmented world.

The Oracular Constraints Method
Constraint satisfaction and combinatorial optimization form the crux of many AI problems. In constraint satisfaction, feasibility-reasoning mechanisms are used to prune the search space, while optimality-reasoning is used for combinatorial optimization. Many AI tasks related to diagnosis, trajectory tracking and planning can be formulated as hybrid problems containing both satisfaction and opti...

The issue of race has followed Barack Obama since he emerged on the national political scene, continuing unabated throughout his successful 2008 presidential campaign. Although the issue of race is not always explicitly acknowledged or discussed by Obama himself, the implications of his successful candidacy for U.S. politics and the ways people in the United States think about race more general...
متن کاملOracular Form and Computing Strong Game-Theoretic Jotto Strategies
We develop a new approach that computes approximate equilibrium strategies in Jotto, a popular word game. Jotto is an extremely large two-player game of imperfect information; its game tree has many orders of magnitude more states than games previously studied, including no-limit Texas Hold’em poker. To address the fact that the game is so large, we propose a novel strategy representation calle...

Consider the following choice problem, known as “Ellsberg’s three-color urn example”, or simply the “Ellsberg Paradox” (Ellsberg [7]). An urn contains 30 red balls, and 60 green and blue balls, in unspecified proportions; subjects are asked to compare (i) a bet on a red draw vs. a bet on a green draw, and (ii) a bet on a red or blue draw vs. a bet on a green or blue draw. If the subject wins a ...
متن کاملQueries to Hybrid MKNF Knowledge Bases through Oracular Tabling
An important issue for the Semantic Web is how to combine open-world ontology languages with closed-world (non-monotonic) rule paradigms. Several proposals for hybrid languages allow concepts to be simultaneously defined by an ontology and rules, where rules may refer to concepts in the ontology and the ontology may also refer to predicates defined by the rules. Hybrid MKNF knowledge bases are ...
